John Mitchell was born January 22, 1985 in Waterloo, Ontario. In 2003, Mitchell was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fifth round of the NHL entry draft, 158th overall. In 2008-09, Mitchell made his NHL debut and one November 1st he scored the first two goals of his NHL career in a game against the New York Rangers, a game in which he was named first star.

Mitchell began the 2010-11 season with the Maple Leafs, but was assigned to the club's AHL affiliate after just 23 games.

On February 28, 2011, the NHL's trade deadline, Mitchell was shipped to the New York Rangers in exchange for a seventh round draft pick.
